Concept and Feature

Concept

lt refers to a car with a green engine system or its equivalents built-in or utilized, featuring higher gasoline mileage and less carbon emissions than those of conventional cars with combustion engines.

* Green Engine System: no use of fossil fuels, zero carbon emissions

    • Utilization of built-in green system: Hybrid car, Plug-in Hybrid car, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell car, Electric car
    • Comparable green effect: Clean diesel car

Feature of Each Type

    • Hybrid car (HEV): features higher gasoline mileage and efficiency than conventional cars as it combines a conventional propulsion system with a rechargeable energy storage system
    • Plug-in Hybrid car (PHEV): Hybrid car rechargeable with household electric battery
    • Hydrogen and Fuel Cell car (FCV): refers to a car where conventional combustion engine has been replaced by fuel cell that generates electricity by chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen through hydrogen tank.
    • Electric car (EV): refers to a car moved by battery-powered electric motors
    • Clean Diesel car: refers to a car with built-in ultra efficiency diesel system with 20~30% more efficiency and less emissions than conventional diesel car

Prospect for Global Automobile Market

Korea Green Car Prospect

  • Hybrid cars were commercialized in 2009. The PHEV is expected to be commercialized by 2013 through government initiatives. With the goal of commercializing the Hydrogen Fuel Cell car by 2018 a total estimated budget of 2.5 trillion won (400 million won from government and two trillion won from private sector) will be invested until 2020.
  • Technological development and charging infrastructure will be established for early commercialization of the PHEV with extra focus on developing common core technologies for Green Cars.
  • Consumers will be assigned incentives and penalties with respect to mileage and carbon emission amounts while automobile taxes will be imposed based on carbon emission amounts instead of conventional engine displacement.
  • Government and private sector will make annual investment of 150 billion won and 5,500~7,200, respectively for the next five years for the joint R&D for the improvement of mileage.
  • Implement Smart Green Car Program featuring light-weight, high efficiency and green drive system car
  • Domestic hybrid car manufacturing status: 656/520,000 in 2007
