Concept

The next-generation electricity network is designed to reduce costs and create additional value based on optimized efficiency by enabling suppliers and consumers to conduct bi-directional communication and exchange information in real time via integrated digital technology

US (Stimulate economy by reinforcing energy security and modernizing outdated electric networks)

  • ’03 Announced ” Grid 2030″ vision for electricity’s second century
  • Specified Smart Grid in ” Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007″
  • ’09 Invested $4.5 billion through “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act”

EU (Expand distribution of New and Renewable Energy, activate electricity trade among member countries)

  • ’04 Set up an organization to implement Smart Grid
  • ’06 Announced the vision for European Smart Grid
  • ’07 Selected five research areas for successful implementation of Smart Grid
  • ’08 Prioritized the R&D areas on Smart Grid

  • Since 2005, 252.2 billion won has been invested in the R&D of 10 IT power technologies.
  • As of 2009, the battery technology for electric vehicles is on a par with that of industrial countries.
  • Full-fledged technological development for Smart Grid will commence in ‘10 .
