The Korea Environment Corporation (KECO) announced it would install charging facilities for electric vehicles in metropolitan cities, provinces, local governments and public institutions. KECO will make an agreement with 38 local governments and state institutions about building charging infrastructure and install 204 chargers by the end of this year.
KECO will take charge of the entire process — a field survey of a place for charging infrastructure, planning the place, purchasing and installing charging facilities and supervision. Based on the guidelines on the installation of charging infrastructure, announced by the Ministry of Environment in this April, KECO will establish the foundation of distribution and operation of electric vehicles by installing efficient and unified charging infrastructures in local governments, state institutions and public institutions. In addition, standardization and performance evaluation of high and low-speed chargers will be conducted.
An official from KECO said the corporation will make an effort to become a driving force behind green growth by creating a new business model for charging service providers. The ministry plans to distribute one million electric vehicles by 2020 and will implement the plan centering on the public sector by 2012. KECO will carry out the project based on experience and know-how it obtained through building 16 charging facilities in 9 places including public institutions and gas stations in the metropolitan area in 2010.
