South Korea’s Minister Lee Maa-nee of Environment said that it’s time that the South Korean government developed a new paradigm for environmental policy. He Said that the public has to be able to nurture environment for everyone to enjoy.
In an interview with Maeil Business News on January 15, Minister Lee said that preserving environment is as important as wisely utilizing our nature to improve and enrich the livelihood of our people.
Citing rest stops in highways, he pointed out tourists who stop by rest stops are unable to enjoy magnificent mountains and rivers that surrounds them due to shortcmoings in designing. When architects design rest stops, they simply leave environment out of the picture and instead focus on helping cars to efficiently move in and out of the area.
Minister Lee said South Korea has not yet reached the stage of taking environment into consideration in designing buildings. He argued that environment has to become a key factor in design in order for South Korea to become an advanced nation.
As he returned from his trip to the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December,
Minister Lee emphasized creating eco-friendly lifestyle. He believes advanced countries not only refer to economically and culturally sound countries, but also countries living an eco-friendly life style.
Minister Lee said South Korea will promote a government-led ‘green campaign’ to educate the
public on driving safely, conserving water and dining properly. He said that he will also work on adding environmental issue as a top agenda in G-20 Summit slated to be held in South Korea in 2010.
