President Lee: “Nuclear Power will Help S. Korea’s Green Growth”

President Lee announced that he will facilitate independence for nuclear power plant technology, while enforcing ‘nurturing nuclear power’ as a major task for South Korea’s green growth. He also confirmed that ‘job creation’ is the number one priority on his agenda in state affair for next year.

“Nuclear power is the only industry that can open up new opportunities to us in the midst of climate change crisis,” and said, “It’s the most practical alternative to reduce carbon emissions and the most economic and cost-effective eco-friendly measure,” President Lee told on December 21 during a performance report from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, the Korea Communications Commission and the Small and Medium Business Administration.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy reported to Cheong Wa Dae (the Blue House) during the report on this day that it is to announce a master plan for greenhouse gas emissions cut in the later half of the year. The ministry is aiming to present an emission curb for different industries and fields, and begin a trial service of the emission trading system where companies can trade schemes for greenhouse gas emissions from next year.

Furthermore, the ministry will explore emerging economies as a new prospect export market. While advanced markets are gradually consuming less owing to the global financial crisis, the
ministry will help putting efforts to target emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil.

The ministry has set its goal to expand the nation’s export to $410 billion and a trade surplus of $20 billion next year.
