The President gave a special address at the opening ceremony of the Global Green Growth Summit held on May 10.

During the speech, The President introduced some of Korea’s initiatives for building up the foundation to pursue green growth strategies through legislation on greenhouse gas emission trading and the completion of a 1,800km bicycle road. “Facing enormous challenges and endless possibilities, the world must work hand in hand and double its efforts to achieve the ultimate goal of green growth,” said The President.

The President also emphasized three core elements of green architecture: a visible strategy toward green growth, its supporting technologies and financial means, and specific action plans.

The President praised the upcoming official launch of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) as an international organization, followed by the agreements attended by ten leaders of the member nations at the Rio World Summit in June. “The official launch of the GGGI seems to help green growth to be accepted as a global asset,” said The President in his speech.

The President introduced the Green Technology Center Korea (GTCK) launched last March in Hongneung as part of the Global Green Growth Park complex. He expressed his hope that the GTCK where Korea’s most advanced science and technology centers are clustered will transform into the mecca of global green technology and knowledge as well as human resource development.

The third and final action plan introduced was to continuously raise Official Development Assistance (ODA) until 2020 and at the same time increase the proportion of green ODA to 30%. He promised to contribute to global cooperation through the establishment of a Global Green Growth Partnership and East Asia Climate Partnership mandated to end this year.

Upon the conclusion of his speech, The President urged to everyone to put words into actions, saying ”Climate change is a common challenge to humankind and for as long as humanity exists, and as long as human lives on this planet, the journey of green growth will continue onwards.”
